After their original Greatest Hits
package, released around 1982, went out of print, Queen put this album
out in 1992 that, in many ways almost replicates the original package.
Key word is "almost". Earlier in the year, they first released a
sort of "greatest hits" compilation called Classic Queen which was mostly peppered
with their latter day material with some early hits thrown in. Those
early hits were on that out of print package, so when they then put
this one out, they couldn't put the same songs on this package
since it had only been about six months, so they fill in the holes with
some different tracks. Fortunately, they do so admirably.
This might be as confusing as heck. Probably the two key things you
really need to know if you feel your head is about to explode with
all of this confusion, is 1) There's no Bohemian Rhapsody (it's
on that Classic record) here, and 2) if you
own Classic Queen along with this
record, then you're pretty much covered. It's amazingly frustrating
actually, and had the guys just swapped a few songs between these two
records, it would have made a nice, solid "parts one and two".
Regardless, just about all of the good stuff is here on these two
albums. I mean, even the album covers are basically identical.
Important Note: There have been several re-releases of volume 1s and
volume 2s, etc. and, for the most part, your safe. I would advice
against Greatest Hits Volume 3,
however, since it's nothing of the sort. It's essentially a bunch of remixes and
alternate recordings.
