Not very necessary, yet most latter day "greatest hits" packages rarely are. Had this been a solid, two disc set of hits and fan favorites, it would have
fared better, even if there are other compilations out there that are better. The second disc is basically dance mixes of songs that are omitted from the first disc. They're good
dance mixes, but it somehow makes this package too haphazard. Then, there's the fact that there are still a handful of very good Prince songs that aren't on here at all, and the fact that there's nothing here past the early 1990s. Of course, that's a record company issue, not a deliberate attempt to limit the collection.
My advice is to stick with The Hits/B-Sides as it's superior by far. If your budget is tight, go with The Very Best of Prince . Both of these albums are more coherent and cover roughly the same period. This one should have been either a double CD of "regulars" or a nice compilation of only dance mixes. Having one of each, featuring different songs, makes it a bit of a mess.
Still, good songs though...
