Around the time of this release,
Compact Discs hadn't quite muscled out cassettes as the favored medium
for music purchases. One of the advantages (for the record industries,
not the consumer) of the compact disc, is that many fans of music were
now purchasing all of their old favorite vinyl albums on this new
improved format.
When this box set was released, it seems a bit strange in retrospective
that it wasn't a "normal" box set, yet it was basically a compilation of
selected full length CDs by the band. The catch was, there were tons of
Pink Floyd fans that had these albums on vinyl or cassette, and this was
a great excuse to buy them all on CD with one purchase. Granted, it was
a hefty purchase, but not overpriced when one considers all that was
included.
First, you had seven full length CDs (including one double, so that's
eight discs). Fans will disagree whether or not all of the material is
exactly what should have been here, but the "classic" period
(from Meddle to The
Wall) is all here. Also included is a nice disc featuring ten of
the early Pink Floyd singles mostly featuring the Syd Barrett days. None of those
tracks had been available on album before (some were featured on compilations, however). Lastly, a nice (large)
hardcover book highlighting the albums is also included.
Maybe too steep for a casual listener, but fans should be happy.
