Kind of a strange compilation. Not
really a "best of". There weren't enough "bests" at this point for such
a thing. This serves as a basic snapshot of the band's early days. In
many ways, the timing of this record was perfect, as they were just
about to soar off into a much more lucrative career with masses of success.
The selections are a bit strange. The good news is there are five songs
that were never released on any album, so this was the only place where
you get a studio version of the brilliant Careful With That Axe,
Eugene, in addition to the wonderfully strange Arnold Layne. They then
pick two songs from their first album, Interstellar Overdrive and
the infectious Bike.
Oddly the only other album represented is the lackluster soundtrack More which has Cirrus Minor and The Nile
Song featured here. Not sure why they chose these songs while so much of their
other material was ignored. The only "new" song is the Roger Waters'
Biding My Time. It has some catchy hooks, but nothing special.
A good place to start, maybe.
