Yes, several of the songs here are great. The
idea, though, is not. Not only should Pink Floyd not put out "greatest
hits" albums, but at this stage (i.e. end of their career), they simply
had too many styles and directions to justify any sort of continuity in
their recording. Listening to a Syd Barrett song from 1967 just doesn't
sound as it should coming right after a David Gilmour song from 1994.
Had the songs been chronological, this would have sounded a tad better. But only a
tad.
Plus, they've hacked some of the lengthier pieces to "fit" more songs on
the album. It's not that noticeable, but purists will balk. Then, of
course, they have to add an unreleased song When The Tigers Broke
Free to maybe justify people buying it since many people already had everything.
The above mentioned song, as most Floyd fans know, was featured in the
movie The Wall, but not the album. It would
be later added to the latter pressings of the CD The Final Cut. It actually worked there.
For the most part, very little works here, sadly.
